Hello, you out there. Welcome to this little corner of the internet, where I’ve set aside a peaceful place to relax, regroup, and sit with your thoughts.
I am Emily Kamp, a polytheist, diviner, spirit worker, and Orpheotelest. It’s okay if you don’t know what those words mean—here’s a quick explanation of each.
- A polytheist is a person who worships many gods. I have worshiped multiple gods since childhood, much to my Christian parents’ chagrin, heh. The majority of the gods I include in my devotional practices come from the southern Mediterranean, from places we now call Greece and Italy, but their stories range far beyond those specific lands. I also include a handful of deities from other parts of the world in my practice, taking care always to honor them, as much as I can, in the ways the cultures who first knew them worshiped them.
- A diviner is a person who, with the assistance of specific allies and tools, can communicate with non-embodied powers such as gods, spirits of nature, the dead, and so on. A diviner’s job is to relay communication back and forth between humans and those powers. The act of doing so is called divination.
- A spirit worker is someone who, through a combination of divination, ritual, and specific (and often context-dependent) actions, can fulfil the wishes of a non-embodied power here in this plane; make allies and tools to assist themselves and others in various aspects of life; or facilitate the relationships that non-embodied powers have with each other, or with the living. Sometimes, this looks like complex, multi-layered rituals that bring peace to a house full of angry spirits. Sometimes, this looks like picking up litter in a nearby park to make the trees there happy.
- An Orpheotelest is, in the ancient Mediterranean, a wandering priest who could initiate others to the mysteries of Dionysos, a god who brings liberation to the living. Plural: Orpheotelestai. Ancient Orpheotelestai are also described as spirit workers who (among other things) freed people from negative cycles of ancestral debt; founded temples and ritual practices to bring balance to the land; and helped guarantee that the dying could find their way to a blessed afterlife. I have been initiated to Dionysos, and to his wife Ariadne, the Mistress of the Labyrinth, and I perform the duties of an Orpheotelest for others today in the name of these gods.
